02 Kits

Kits

Is my vehicle Katable?

Most popular vans fit our standard kits — VW Transporter, Toyota Hiace, Ford Transit, Hyundai iLoad, Mercedes Vito and more. Our modular system adapts to factory dimensions without permanent modifications. After 6 years building in Sydney we have shipped 2,402 kits across Australia, so chances are your ride is already on the list.

Run your vehicle through our compatibility tool for a confirmed match. If your ride isn't listed, send us a photo — most uncommon vans turn out to fit once we eyeball them.

Can I customize my kit?

Yes. Every standard kit can be tweaked — extra features, adjusted dimensions, personalised finishes. Small mods (different timber, drawer layout, fabric colour) live in our Custom Kit service. Ground-up rebuilds with electrics, plumbing and insulation belong in Full Conversion.

Start a brief on the Custom Kit page, or check Full Conversion if you want a full van build.

How long does it take to build a Kata Kit?

Build time is 4–6 weeks from confirmed order to ready-to-ship, depending on the season and the kit. As soon as your order and payment are confirmed we start cutting — nothing sits in a queue.

Got a trip already booked? Tell us when you order and we'll do our best to have it ready sooner.

Shipping then adds 2–5 business days within Australia. You will get an ETA at checkout and a tracking link once the courier picks it up.

What is the difference between Camperbox, Vanbox and Surfbox?

Three kits, three rigs:

  • Camperbox — ready-to-go kit for smaller vehicles like SUVs. Drawers, stove area extension, sliding bed. Easy to assemble and remove between adventures.
  • Vanbox — built for vans with big storage needs. Two spacious drawers on heavy-duty rails, queen-sized bed when open, just 1300 mm tall when shut so crew seats stay usable.
  • Surfbox — designed to swallow long gear: surfboards, snowboards, bikes. Large drawers, stove extension, sleep and seating area, packs down small.
What materials do you use for the modular components?

We build with 16 mm laminated plywood. Lightweight enough to keep your van under its load limit, sturdy enough to live in for a season, and moisture-resistant so it survives a wet boardshort on the bed.

For Full Conversion floors we layer 15 mm structural plywood with 4 mm hybrid flooring — fully waterproof, easy to clean, available in several finishes.

03 Custom Kit

Custom Kit

What is a Custom Kit?

Custom Kit is our kit-anchored modification service. You start from a standard Vanbox, Surfbox or Camperbox and we change the pieces that matter to you — drawer layout, bed dimensions, timber finish, fabric colour, extra cabinetry. The rest of the kit stays as designed, so we keep the build time short and the price predictable.

Send us a brief on the Custom Kit page — sketches, photos, a paragraph of intent. We come back with a quote and a render before any sawdust flies.

How is Custom Kit different from Full Conversion?

Custom Kit sits between Standard kits and Full Conversion. Standard kits ($1,600–$8,000 AUD) are catalogue products with set dimensions. Custom Kit ($500–$2,500 AUD on top of a base kit) lets you change pieces of a kit. Full Conversion (from $20,000 AUD) is a ground-up rebuild from an empty van — electrics, plumbing, insulation, the lot.

If you want a different bed layout in your Vanbox, that is Custom Kit. If you want lights, water and a heater inside an empty Transporter, that is Full Conversion.

How much does a Custom Kit cost?

Most modifications add $500–$2,500 AUD on top of the base kit price. Larger redesigns — new bed module, extra cabinetry, unusual fabrics or timbers — get quoted individually. Prices are AUD and include GST.

We lock the quote before any build starts. No moving targets, no surprise invoices.

How long does a Custom Kit take?

Brief to ready-to-ship: 3–5 weeks total. First sketch lands in 3–5 days, quote follows 1–2 days after you approve the design, build itself runs around 21 days from deposit.

A bit faster than a Standard kit because we already know the base unit — most of the engineering is done.

What if the design does not fit my van?

We run compatibility checks before the quote is locked. If something does not fit once we have your van measurements, we redesign that piece — included in the original quote, no surcharge.

Easiest path: drop your vehicle details into the brief form, attach photos of the cargo area, and we will tell you up front what works and what needs adjustment. Contact us if you want to chat before sending a brief.

04 Full Conversion

Full Conversion

How do I apply for a Full Conversion?

Start on the Full Conversion page. Book a free quotation call, fill the form with your vehicle, your must-haves and a rough idea of the layout — a doodle is fine — and we will be in touch within 1–2 business days.

During the call we map your needs, talk packs (Pack 1 / Pack 2 / custom), agree a budget range, and book a workshop visit if it makes sense. No commitment until you approve the formal quote.

What is included in the electrical and water systems?

Electrical: we install the full system — lights, fans, appliances, battery bank, charge controller, USB and 240 V outlets, optional solar panels on the roof. The system is sized to your usage (weekend trips vs full-time living).

Water: under-body tanks or internal tanks, plus the plumbing for sink, shower and pump. Mention any specific needs in the brief — that is what Full Conversion is for. We do not install gas fittings.

How do you handle insulation, heating and ventilation?

Insulation: 4 mm sound-deadening mat on the panels plus wool insulation in walls and ceiling. Cosy in winter, cool in summer, quiet on the highway.

Climate: reverse-cycle air conditioner (cold and heat) for the cabin. Ventilation choices include ceiling fan, wall fan, passive vents — or all of the above. Tell us where you will be sleeping (alpine winters vs Northern beaches) and we will size it to match.

What finishes can I choose for floor, ceiling and walls?

Floor: 15 mm structural plywood topped with 4 mm hybrid flooring. Waterproof, scratch-resistant, easy to clean. A three-star wear-layer option is available for heavy use.

Ceiling and walls: solid pine lining boards, finished with Danish-oiled wood or a white paint finish. Same boards on ceiling and walls — visually consistent, easy to maintain.

Privacy: blackout curtain options in several fabrics and colours, fitted on rails to match the layout.

Can I bring my own design?

Yes — bring sketches, mood boards, Pinterest links, anything. Our team turns your ideas into a render that becomes the blueprint for the build. You sign off on the render before we cut anything.

Sleeping options: single sofa-bed, fixed double bed, or a hybrid layout — all come with fully lined mattresses. Storage, bench, kitchenette and seating are tailored to fit.

05 Compatibility & Measurements

Compatibility & Measurements

Which measurements do I need to take if I have an SUV?

For an SUV-based Camperbox fit, capture five numbers:

  1. Width between the wheel arches.
  2. Total length behind the front seats with the seats pushed all the way forward.
  3. Where the second row of seats ends when folded flat.
  4. Height of your chosen Camperbox (200 mm or 250 mm) measured against the back of the upright second-row seats.
  5. From that point, the distance to the closed boot door.
Which measurements do I need to take if I have a van?

For a van fit, three numbers cover most kits:

  • Minimum distance between the wheel arches.
  • Maximum width wall to wall.
  • Total cargo length behind the front seats.

All listings show dimensions as width × height × length. Cross-check against the product page before ordering — or use the compatibility tool for a confirmed fit.

Why are accurate measurements so important?

Once you confirm an order, we start cutting against the measurements you provided. If a number is off, the kit we build will be off — and we cannot exchange or refund items that arrived correct to the measurements you gave us.

Measure twice, order once. If you are not 100% sure, send us photos with a tape measure visible and we will sanity-check before you confirm.

What if my vehicle is uncommon or not listed?

Most uncommon vans fit a standard kit once we see them — our system is more forgiving than the dropdown suggests. Send us photos of the cargo area (boot open, seats folded if relevant) and the three measurements above, and we will tell you within 1–2 business days whether a standard kit fits, a Custom Kit is the move, or Full Conversion is the right path.

What tools do I need to measure?

A 5 m tape measure, a pen, and 10 minutes. That is the whole kit. Measure with seats in their normal driving position first, then again with the rear seats folded flat — both numbers help us spot interferences early.

If you can, get a second person to hold the tape — it is much easier than wrestling it solo against the wheel arch.

06 Installation

Installation

Can I install my kit on my own?

Yes. Every standard kit is designed to be self-installed and ships with an illustrated manual that walks you through every step. A second pair of hands makes the bigger panels easier, but the build is doable solo with patience.

Stuck on a step? Our customer support team is one call or email away — we have walked hundreds of owners through their first install.

How long does the installation take?

Plan a half-day to a full day with one helper:

  • Camperbox — around 2 hours.
  • Vanbox — around 5 hours.
  • Surfbox — around 5 hours.

Times include unboxing, dry-fitting, fastening and tidying up. Add 30–60 minutes if you are also installing optional accessories.

Does the kit come with everything for assembly?

Yes. Every kit ships with the panels, hardware, straps, loops and fasteners required for installation. The only thing you bring is a basic toolkit: a drill or screwdriver, a 13 mm spanner, and a tape measure.

Wheel-arch panels may need a small manual trim to match the exact curve of your van — the manual covers this, and it is the most common five-minute task on install day.

Do you offer a professional installation service?

Yes — book our assembly service at the Matraville workshop in Sydney and we will install your kit for you. Pro installation is a flat $400 AUD for any kit — Camperbox, Vanbox or Surfbox.

All prices include GST. Add the service at checkout, and we will book you in for the day after the kit comes off the saw.

Can the kit be removed when I need the seats back?

Yes — every standard kit is designed to come out as cleanly as it goes in. No permanent fixings, no holes drilled in the van body. A helper makes the bigger panels manageable, but one person with the manual can do it.

Store the kit in a dry garage between trips and it will keep its finish for years.

07 Shipping & Delivery

Shipping & Delivery

Do you ship across all of Australia?

Yes. We deliver fully assembled kits anywhere in Australia, capital cities and regional. The standard route is depot collection from a courier hub near you; doorstep delivery is available as a paid upgrade in most postcodes.

Shipping cost is calculated from weight, dimensions and your postcode — the final amount shows on the checkout page before payment.

How long does delivery take?

After your kit is built (4–6 weeks from order confirmation), shipping itself takes 2–5 business days depending on your location and the carrier. You will get an ETA at checkout and a tracking link from the courier once it is on the road.

Peak season (December–January) or unforeseen courier delays can add a day or two — we flag this if we see it coming.

Depot pickup or doorstep delivery?

Two options:

  • Depot pickup — your kit lands at a courier hub near you, usually cheaper, limited pickup hours.
  • Doorstep delivery — your kit comes to your address, more expensive, no juggling a courier hub.

Available methods can vary by postcode and carrier. Both options use trusted partners and your kit ships fully wrapped and braced.

How can I track my order?

Once your kit ships, the courier emails a tracking link directly to you. Check your spam folder if it has not landed within 24 hours of the dispatch confirmation.

For depot pickup, you will get a second email once the kit has arrived and is ready to collect.

Do you deliver internationally?

Not at the moment — we ship within Australia only. If you are overseas and still want to build, we can supply DXF blueprints so you can cut the kit on a CNC machine locally.

Contact us with your country, the kit you are interested in, and we will send pricing for the blueprint pack.

08 Warranty

Warranty

What warranty comes with my Kata kit?

Every Kata product carries a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects in the cabinetry and modular components. The warranty covers structural issues — split panels, failed joinery, faulty fasteners we supplied.

Hardware and appliances (drawer slides, fans, electronics) are covered by their supplier warranties, typically 1–2 years depending on the brand.

How do I make a warranty claim?

Email us with your order number, contact details, a description of the issue, and photos of the affected part. Our team reviews each claim and replies within 1–2 business days. If approved, you bring the unit back to the Sydney workshop and we repair or replace at our cost.

For remote owners we work out a freight solution case by case — we cover the cost when the issue is within warranty.

What if my kit arrives damaged?

Inspect the packaging when it arrives. If anything looks crushed, scuffed or split, photograph it before unwrapping and email us within 48 hours. Transit damage is covered — we will arrange a replacement panel or a full kit swap, and we handle the courier claim for you.

After 48 hours we still help, but transit-damage claims with the courier need to be raised quickly.

Can I cancel an order after placing it?

Cancellation terms scale with how far the build has progressed:

  • Days 0–7 after order: $300 AUD admin fee, the rest is refunded.
  • Days 8–14: 10% of the order value plus the $300 AUD admin fee.
  • Day 15 onwards: the build is in production, no refund available.

If you need to change something rather than cancel, get in touch early — changes are easier before we cut anything.

Can I modify my order after confirming?

Once an order is paid and the build has started, we cannot change measurements or layout — the panels are already cut. Colour, accessories and shipping address can sometimes still be adjusted if you reach out in the first few days.

Spotted an issue with your order? Message our team immediately — the sooner we know, the more we can help.

09 Ordering & Payment

Ordering & Payment

How do I purchase a Kata kit?

Pick your kit on the shop, choose colour and any upgrades, confirm your vehicle via the compatibility tool, and add to cart. Checkout walks you through shipping address, delivery method (depot or doorstep) and payment — final total including GST is shown before you confirm.

Once payment lands you receive a confirmation email with your order number, tax invoice and ETA. The build queue starts the same day.

What payment methods do you accept?

Four options at checkout:

  • Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard).
  • PayPal — fees apply on top of the kit price.
  • Bank wire — details supplied at checkout.
  • Afterpay — split into four equal instalments, eligibility shown at checkout.

All prices are in AUD and include GST.

How do I know my order is confirmed?

Your order is confirmed the moment we receive payment. You get an email with the tax invoice, order number and a summary of the kit, colour, options and shipping. If you do not see it within 30 minutes, check your spam folder before reaching out.

A second email goes out when the build is finished and the courier collects the kit — that one carries the tracking link.

How do I get in touch with customer support?

Our team is based at the Sydney workshop (54 Raymond Ave, Matraville NSW 2036) and answers within 1–2 business days. Drop us a line through the contact page with your order number and the question — we will route it to the right person on the build floor.

For walk-ins, book a workshop visit first so we can have your kit and the right person ready when you arrive.
