Camper kit or full conversion? How to choose

1 min read

It’s the first question almost everyone asks us: do I buy a kit, or do I have the whole van converted? Both get you camping — they just suit different builds, budgets and timelines.

A kit is fast, flexible and affordable

A modular kit (Vanbox, Surfbox or Camperbox) drops into a van that’s otherwise stock. Kitchen, storage and a bed, ready in weeks rather than months, from around $1,600. Camperbox kits even install in minutes on SUVs and utes without removing your back seats, so the daily driver stays a daily driver.

A full conversion is a finished home

A full conversion starts from an empty van and builds in electrics, plumbing, insulation and cabinetry — signed off for compliance. It costs more and takes longer, but you get a turn-key camper tailored exactly to how you live.

Which is right for you?

  • Weekends and gear-hauling, keep it removable → a kit.
  • Your van isn’t on our list, or you want a ground-up build → full conversion.
  • A kit’s almost right but not quite → a custom kit sits in between.

Not sure your van fits? Check the compatibility page and we’ll point you the right way.
