How much does a Toyota Hiace conversion cost in Sydney?
A Kata Full Conversion for the Hiace starts from around $20,000 AUD depending on the layout and inclusions. Pop-Tops are quoted separately and add to the base conversion. Modular kits (Vanbox, Surfbox, Camperbox) start from $2,200 for a Hiace fit. Get a free quote for an itemised price on your specific van.
Should I buy an H200 or H300 for a camper conversion?
It depends on budget and use case. The H200 is more affordable (often imported as used JDM stock) and simpler to work on. The H300 has a wider interior, better crash rating, and stronger resale but costs more upfront. For a first-time camper build with a long ownership horizon, most owners lean H300. For budget builds and off-grid weekends, the H200 is still a great platform.
How long does a Hiace Full Conversion take to build?
Typically 4–10 weeks at our Matraville workshop from design sign-off. Pop-Top installs add time depending on scope. Modular kits (Vanbox, Surfbox, Camperbox) ship in 4–6 weeks from order.
Can two adults sleep comfortably in a Hiace conversion?
Yes. A standard Full Conversion or Pop-Top Hiace comfortably sleeps two adults. The Pop-Top adds a second sleeping area for extended trips. For families of 3–4, we recommend either the H300 with a Pop-Top or a custom layout.
Can I keep my Hiace seats?
It depends on the build. Modular kits like Vanbox and Surfbox are designed for the cargo area behind the seats, so seats can typically stay. Full Conversions usually keep the second row when a Pop-Top is included — so you can travel four and sleep four. Without a Pop-Top, we typically remove the second row to maximise living space, though this is customisable.
Do you convert both H200 and H300 Hiaces?
Yes. Both generations are core to what we do at Kata — over 150 Hiaces converted combined. Bring us either variant and we'll build for the specific dimensions of your van.
Does the cabinetry ship fully assembled?
Yes. Because we've scanned and mapped most H200 and H300 variants over 150+ conversions, we know your van's dimensions before we build. Cabinetry ships fully assembled to your nearest freight depot Australia-wide — no flat-pack, no on-site build work. You pick up, drop it into your van, and drive off.
Do you work with Japanese-import Hiaces?
Yes — extensively. A large share of H200 Hiaces on Australian roads are Japanese-domestic-market (JDM) imports: Super GL, Super Custom, Regius, Grand Cabin and similar variants that were never sold new in Australia. These often come with higher-spec factory trim, extras like walk-through cabins, and low-mileage histories thanks to Japan's strict shaken inspection regime. Every Kata Hiace build works with JDM imports — flag your specific model at consult and we'll confirm fit.
Where is your workshop?
Kata Camperbox is at 54 Raymond Ave, Matraville NSW 2036 — around 20 minutes from Sydney CBD. Every Hiace conversion is built on-site by our team.
Do you offer a warranty on Hiace conversions?
Yes. All Kata builds come with a 1-year workmanship warranty. Individual components (electrics, hardware, appliances) are covered by their respective manufacturer warranties — passed through to you.
Do I need to remove my back seats before ordering?
No. We confirm the exact interior dimensions of your Hiace by email before we cut materials — you don't need to send measurements upfront. If seats need to come out for your chosen layout, we handle that at install.
